Introducing a master pipe carver and renaissance musician. Can you imagine how particular, precise and meticulously crafted a clarinet reed has to be for a professional musician? They are made of bamboo and needless to say, must be perfect. Less than perfect and the clarinet tone is unacceptable.
Jack Howell makes those perfect clarinet reeds – over 10,000 so far. He’s also a professional orchestral clarinetist. He teaches music at Dusquene University in Pittsburgh. Builds bamboo fly rods with skills that have been out of fashion for many years. He even wrote a wonderful step by step book on how to build a fly rod yourself. As a master pipe carver, knowing what you have just read, what quality of smoking pipes do you think Jack makes?
POY Chairman Rick Willoughby has done it again. We discovered Jack Howell’s pipes from our friend Neill Archer Roan. Jack created Neill’s first Passion For Pipes POY a few years ago. The results? Spectacular. Jack is amazing and amazingly busy. Would he have time to do a POY for the Seattle Club? Luckily for us he found the time. Every so often a very special POY comes along that you should not miss out on – this is that POY.
The Jack Howell Bent Acorn: 2014 SPC POY. Rick said we haven’t done a bent pipe for awhile and this is a sensational way to start. The photos, as they say, do not do this wonderful pipe justice. It is balanced to a fare thee well. The blast is exquisitely done. The acorn shape is one of our all time favorites. It is a Danish inspiration that translates perfectly. The feel of this pipe in your hand is comfortable and everything you’d want in a pipe. How Rick avoided smoking the prototype before the photos is beyond me! I know we said this before but truly, the Jack Howell POY is a pipe you’d be well advised to purchase for your collection and pure smoking pleasure.
